Girls Weekend Getaways in Parksville, BC

Someone always ends up organizing it. If that someone is you, you already know the problem: five or six calendars that refuse to line up, and a shortlist of places that are either too far to be worth the drive, too expensive once you've multiplied it by six, or too small to get everyone under one roof.

If you're planning from Vancouver Island or the Lower Mainland, Parksville solves a lot of those problems surprisingly well. It's quieter than the girls trip destinations that get all the attention, and in the off-season you'll have a good stretch of beach to yourselves.

Why does Parksville work for a girls' weekend?

The best places for girlfriend trips tend to be the ones nobody has to organize much once you arrive. Parksville sits on the sheltered east coast of Vancouver Island. From Victoria you can be here in about two hours, which makes it easy to manage for a Friday-to-Sunday trip, and from Vancouver it's a ferry plus a short drive up the highway.

For a group, having one cottage or townhouse makes a big difference. You have a kitchen, living room and fireplace to share instead of everyone disappearing into separate hotel rooms. Between the beach, the spa, Coombs and the restaurants nearby, you really don't need to plan much in advance.

Where should a group of six stay in Parksville?

Our forest cottages and oceanview townhouses run around 1,000 square feet, with a full kitchen, fireplace and enough living space for everyone to hang out together. Most sleep up to six, counting the pull-out sofa. Off-season it usually works out cheaper per person than several hotel rooms. One bill at the end of it, and nobody texting from another floor to ask where everyone's gone.
Most of our two-bedroom units have a queen in the main bedroom, twins or doubles in the second and a typically a queen-sized sleeper sofa in the living room. That's comfortable for four adults with two on the pull-out. Six fit, but it's a squeeze.
If six adults all want a proper bed, ask about the beach-level townhouses. Those have a queen in both bedrooms rather than singles, and two of them are three-bedroom units that sleep up to 8 or 10. There are only two three-bedroom units at the resort, so it goes a long way ahead and it's a question to raise when you're picking dates. All units except 3 units have one bathroom.
We can't promise a specific unit number, but we do book by unit type, so the setting is a choice you get to make.

What is there to do on a girls' weekend in Parksville?

Rathtrevor feels completely different once the summer crowds are gone. In fall and winter you can walk a long stretch of beach and barely see anyone else, especially first thing in the morning.

There's an indoor pool, a hot tub and a sauna on the property for guests. The Grotto Spa at Tigh-Na-Mara is a ten-minute walk down Resort Drive, and Coombs market is fifteen minutes inland, open every day of the year. There are good pubs a short drive away and good coffee for the next morning. And if it rains, the pool, hot tub, sauna and nearby spa give you plenty of indoor options.

A two-night Parksville itinerary

Friday. Arrive in the afternoon and pick up groceries in Parksville on the way in. We'd leave the first night open. Cook at the cottage, light the fire, and walk down to the beach if there's still daylight.

Saturday. Out on the sand in the morning while the tide's low, then the pool or the spa in the afternoon, or Coombs and the shops in Qualicum Beach if that suits the group better. The Black Goose Inn is right on the property, which also means nobody has to drive after dinner.

Sunday. No alarms, a slow coffee, one last walk on the beach, and home by mid-afternoon.

We'd keep it loose on purpose, because groups tend to want a free afternoon more than they want another booking in the calendar.

The Grotto Spa

At Beach Acres, we’ve got an indoor heated pool, a hot tub and a sauna on the property, free for guests, and for a lot of groups that covers the afternoon on its own. Nobody has to drive anywhere, and you can go back for a second soak after dinner!

If you’re looking for an even more luxurious experience, the Grotto at Tigh-Na-Mara is a ten-minute walk down Resort Drive. The experience takes roughly two hours and includes the mineral pool, whirlpool, waterfall and cedar barrel saunas. You can book the restaurant afterwards and stay in your robe. Guests must be 19 or over, with 13 to 18 admitted only alongside an adult spa guest. They recommend booking four to six weeks ahead, so it's better sorted when you pick the dates than left to the Friday.

Beach Acres or an Airbnb for a girls' weekend?

Most of what sends girlfriend trips to Airbnb applies here too. You get a whole cottage or townhouse to yourselves, with a full kitchen, a fireplace and room to spread out, so the weekend doesn't turn into three restaurant meals a day.

What a private rental can't include is everything else on the property. We're on 23 acres directly beside Rathtrevor Beach, so getting to the sand is a couple of minutes on foot rather than a drive. The indoor heated pool, hot tub and sauna are free for guests, and so are the tennis and pickleball courts. October through May our rates come down for the off-season, which is when most groups are booking anyway.

There's also someone here. If the fireplace won't light or you'd like a later checkout, that's a quick stop at the office instead of a message to a host in another time zone.

When is the best time for a girls' weekend in Parksville?

Summer is the busiest season at Beach Acres, especially during school holidays, so accommodations book earlier and rates are higher. For girlfriend weekend getaways, October through May is usually easier. Rates are lower, the resort is quieter, and there's more flexibility with dates.

Spring sits between the two, with longer evenings and the gardens coming back. Long weekends are their own case whatever the month, since they book early and carry a three-night minimum.

How do you get to Parksville?

From Vancouver, take a BC Ferries sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay or Tsawwassen to Duke Point, then drive thirty to forty minutes north. Allow about four hours door to door once terminal time is in.

From Victoria it's roughly two hours up the Island Highway, and from Nanaimo about thirty minutes.

Book the ferry ahead if you're crossing on a Friday afternoon or coming home on a Sunday. We've written up the routes and timings in more detail if you want them. If everyone can fit comfortably, bringing one car also makes the weekend much easier.

Planning your girls' weekend

Parksville doesn't come up as often as Tofino or Victoria when people list the best girls trip destinations on the Island. It's a shorter drive than Tofino, and the resort backs onto Rathtrevor Beach. Most groups stay for two nights, book the spa ahead if it's part of the plan, and leave the rest fairly open. October through May is generally easier for availability and lower rates.
